Arugam Bay is the closest thing Sri Lanka has to a SE Asian Backpacker mecca. For 6 months of the year, its point break draws wannabe and actual surfers like a magnet, and for the rest of the year its a relatively sleepy rural town at the end of the east coast road. When we arrived, the weather was perfect, the onshore winds had left only a choppy ripple of surf, so we took advantage of the solitude to visit some local landmarks and the amazing Kumana National Park.
The beach at Arugam Bay is still a work place for locals
Theres a nice walk around the point..and a few angry dogs on the inland route back
Off season means plenty of space on the beach
Sunset is a great time to visit Crocodile rock, which is a 15 minute tuk tuk from town and after a short walk gives spectacular coastal vistas.
