The South of Sri Lanka is known for its beautiful beaches and great surfing.
In the last few weeks, we have taken our visitors on trips down the coast to explore them. Mirissa is about 35 km away and there are about 6 towns in between. Mostly the beaches are narrow, with fringing reefs and development (a mix of very swish resorts and small guesthouses) close to the edge. After the tsunami, development was banned within 100m of the shoreline – clearly this was more of a guideline than a rule. Having lunch in a nice hotel on the edge of the Indian ocean is one of those special pleasures which never fails to impress!
We recently ‘discovered’ Devil Island a small island which you can swim across to, and due to its relative isolation, has fantastic snorkelling and reefs in good condition.
